Controversy: Nestlé killed Chipwich

I have been wondering for quite some time what happened to chipwich? I was wondering why the ice cream man didn’t have it and why 7-eleven only had the crappy Nestlé tollhouse cookie sandwich (chipwich knockoff)

Then I went to Wikipedia!

A Chipwich is an ice cream sandwich made of ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies. Sometimes, the sandwich is rolled in chocolate chips which stick to the ice cream. The original Chipwich was invented by Richard LaMotta (1942-2010) in New York City and was made up of vanilla ice cream sandwiched by two chocolate-chip cookies.

Chipwiches date back to 1981 when LaMotta created the Chipwich and began a guerrilla marketing campaign, in which he trained and enlisted 100 street cart vendors (mostly students) to sell the Chipwich on the streets of New York City. The campaign established Chipwich as a successful brand. CoolBrands, the country’s second-largest ice cream distributor, bought the Chipwich brand in 2002, and sold it in 2007 to Dreyer’s division of Nestlé who has stopped production of the original Chipwich because it competed with its own chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.

This is the crap they replaced the chipwich with!

When Ford killed Mercury they cut costs because it was the same car but only had a different grill, tail lights and emblems, but it was the same car!!

Chipwich and Tollhouse are 2 totally different recipes! It was stupid to cancel it! People who hate chipwich would buy tollhouse and vise versa! Meanwhile, Nestlé would get both the profits! What is the best way to compete? A 2 headed coin! You always win! Unless, you pick tails lol

Nestle could have had a 2 headed coin! Chipwich and Tollhouse!

Bring back the Chipwich!!!

Lets look at it another way! What’s better a Louis Vuitton or a fake Louis from canal st in NYC?

The Chipwich is the best and original like the Louis!

But people still buy the knockoff Louis like the tollhouse because they don’t want to spend the money for the original…

Charge more if you have to but, bring back the Original Chipwich!!

**Update** April 25th 2018

The Original Chipwich is back!

OMFG! It is amazing and all that I remember! Today I received a batch of Original Chipwich!

And boy was it amazing!

Joel’s outrageous was the closest to the original I have ever tasted!

But what Joel failed to do was roll the sandwich in tiny chips like a Chipwich!

Having not tasted one in many years, I forgot the importance of the mini chips and I only liked the fact that it’s more chocolate!

However; now having tasted it again, I can fully explain: the mini chips add layered texture! You get the soft cookie creamy French vanilla ice cream and then the crunchy chips! Its layered perfection!

Now I do love Joel’s half dipped cookies!

I would say Chipwich, do a fully chocolate dipped cookie option! If you are going to go halfway screw that go all the way! And make multi flavors! Mint chocolate chip! Peanut butter!

    • It ruled the premade (note premade) ice cream cookie market. Delicious Homemade cookies with homemade ice cream rules them all! 😉

Trader Joe’s sells their own brand of chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches that taste exactly as I remember Chipwiches to be. They call them “Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches” and are sold in a box of 4. Give them a try!

I just came across your article because I was researching the “Chipwich”. I was Chipwich addict back in the day I would go to 7-eleven by my house and by 2 at a time, I loved them. As I got older I would always look for them but suddenly 7-eleven just stopped selling them. They were replaced with that crappy Tollhouse knock off. I have been on the hunt ever since. I have looked for the Original Chipwich every where I would go through the years but just had to accept the fact that they must have stopped making them. But anytime I see anything that looks like one I get to see if it’s anything like THE CHIPWICH. About 2 years ago, an ice cream truck came through our neighborhood and they sold the Blue Bunny version, it was pretty good but you can’t find them in stores, it least I couldn’t. About a year ago the Trader Joe’s version suddenly popped up in my freezer. My mother in law told me she stuck them in there because she knows I’m always looking for the Chipwich. I have to say I thought it was pretty darn close to the original. This past weekend I was at the grocery store and while passing the frozen food section saw Good Humor’s attempt at the chipwich, I thought it pretty much resembled the chipwich so I’ll try it. It’s mediocre there’s barely any chips in the cookie portion. As I sat here and I ate it, I again longed for the original and decided to look it up and found the Wikipedia article as well and know your site. I agree with your article Tollhouse totally screwed up. There’s never been anything like the original but out of all the ones I’ve tried, I think Trade Joe’s is the closest…

    • If you read the comments section, you will be happy to know that Chipwich has been relaunched! You heard it here first! The president of the relaunch commented here! Until they are in every 7-11/quick check/wawa (convenient store) it doesn’t really help, but I am sure they soon will be! I have yet to see and taste a new relaunch! I can’t wait!

i used to eat a chipwich everyday in middle school well amost.. from 1994-96. i even had a technique in eating the perimeter and then squishing the cookie down a bit to extend the life. i miss the chipwich im super stoked they are coming back, hopefully they taste the same as the original.

    • Still haven’t found one! I have found a bunch of cookie places making cookie sandwiches, such as insomnia cookies in the LES of Manhattan, but they suck!

The Trader Joe’s version will blow your mind.

    • I wasn’t impressed. They were smaller, they didn’t taste like a Chipwich! They were good, but weren’t a Chipwich! A couple local homemade ice cream places make them also like Curly’s in Riverdale, NJ. However, the cookies they use have little to no taste! If the cookies were more rich in flavor they would destroy Chipwich, because the ice cream is that good. However, they fall short!

This is one of the tragedies of our time, the brutal slaying of Chipwich by a faceless corporation that lacks taste buds. I am glad to read about the Trader Joe’s version, and I suppose I will have to make a special trip there to try it.

Maybe it will be a thing I get when I go there.

    • Yeah, it’s not the same, but it is good! Allegedly Chipwich was reborn! But I have yet to locate one!

Chipwich was the best ice-cream sandwich. I’ll always despise Nestle. Funny thing that my local Acme had them in the freezer section just months ago after their supposed death. Now they’re gone again! Darn!!

  9. I actually tried a new ice cream cookie sandwich called Joel’s outrageous! It was amazing! Slightly smaller than a chipwich (they call them sliders, still not an excuse) however, what you do get is an amazing flavorful couple bites! The ice cream is like French vanilla, its flavorful and rich! The cookie is soft and moist! And it is half dipped in chocolate! The only thing missing is rolling it in mini chips! The owner is also looking into making a chocolate chip mint version! Now that’s exciting! Stay tuned for its own review here on this site!

Hi guys, My father invented and owned Chipwich for 20+ years. HE would love all this feedback, unfortunately he passed away in 2010 and occasionally I google Chipwich and read some of the stuff online. There is a new version of Chipwich, it was started by a company called Retro brands they bought the name, I don’t know what ingredients they use or anything like that, but you can give it a try. Hopefully it is as good as my dad’s.

    October 5, 2017 at 5:50 PM

    • Hi Tommy, sorry to hear about your dad. I have heard they bought and remade chipwich, the owner contacted me here, but I have yet to see it in the wild and I have yet to try it! 😭

      October 5, 2017 at 6:08 PM

    • Hello, Tommy!
Any ideas of what stores may be carrying the new Chipwich?
Not to long ago my Acme suddenly had some “Chipwich”‘s that quickly sold out and weren’t brought back. Perhaps that was the new one. It was almost at a Chipwich level, but a little off.

I think The New Chipwich is being released in the New York area in Deli’s and local stores. I hope the quality is the same as my dad’s. The owner of the company that is making now had contacted me also, I hope the quality is the same as my dad’s. There are many knockoff Chipwiches which have been around for as long since the beginning of the original Chipwich. Some might be good, I don’t know as I only ate the real Chipwich.
I hope to try the new Chipwich soon. Thanks for the interest, my dad would be honored,
